The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
