European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal news:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
